History
The grand opening of the Pocahontas Library as a branch of the Tazewell County Public Library happened on June 1, 2021. Previously, the library was an independent library known as the Emma Yates Memorial Library, which opened on May 31, 1987 through the combined efforts of the Abbs Valley, Boissevain and Pocahontas communities.

Built in 1901, it is located in a two-story brick structure on Centre Street. Originally a millinery shop run by Miss Emma Yates, where she lived on the top floor. Yates served on the town council, clerk of the Baptist church, and treasurer of the Missionary Society. Yates was born on February 19, 1869 and went to New York to study designing. The millinery was the social center for local ladies and sold hats and dresses. Miss Yates passed away on November 27, 1954.
