Tazewell County Public Library

Renovations News & Updates

March 2023

Along with many other popular books, “Pete the Cat” will soon be walking his shoes down the street to a temporary pop-up library location. The Tazewell branch will temporarily close to prepare for needed repairs; the last day of normal operations is March 31.

The new location, open April 12, will be at 197 Main St., on the first floor of the Tazewell County Administration Building. Hours will be Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday from 11 a.m -1 p.m. At this pop-up location, patrons may browse a limited selection of new and popular books, return books, request and pick up holds, and access wi-fi.

Other branch locations in Bluefield, Richlands and Pocahontas can receive any items checked
out from the Tazewell branch and will continue to offer the full range of library services.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long will the renovation take?
The first stage of construction will take roughly three months to complete, from April through at least early July. After the compaction grouting is complete, the second stage to repair the damaged wall will need to go out to bid. After the second stage is complete, the carpet will need to be installed.

What will happen to the Tazewell library staff while it is closed?
They will work at the other TCPL branches, located in Richlands, Bluefield, and Pocahontas.

What will happen to the collection at the Tazewell library?
Most of the collection has been moved to the west side of the library and will remain there, protected by plastic. Newer and popular items will be available for checkout at the pop-up library Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday of every week from 11-1.

Where will the pop-up be located? What will its hours be?
The temporary pop-up location will be at the County Administrative building, 197 Main St. in Tazewell. It will be open from 11-1 on Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday.

Where can I pick up my holds?
You can either pick them up at the pop-up during regular hours, or you can have them sent to the Richlands, Bluefield, or Pocahontas branch.

Will the Tazewell book drop be open so I can return my items?
No. The book drop will be closed starting May 1, and the front porch will not be accessible. Returns should either be brought to the pop-up during open hours, or taken to the Richlands, Bluefield, or Pocahontas branches. See the library’s hours here.

Will the wi-fi still work outside the library?
No. There will be wi-fi available at the pop-up library, where there will also be hotspots available for checkout.
